Amanda Palmer, on cancer and friendship

The amazing Amanda Palmer has canceled her year of touring to be with her friend Anthony, who is about to start treatment for cancer.

You can read about it here.

Anthony tells stories, and one of the best I've ever heard is below.

Take heed, and listen to it in a quiet spot, because it will likely break your heart.

This, my friends, is the power of story.

Doesn't it just hurt you, that story? I bawled on reading it on the way to work last week.

I stopped it. They're gonna kill that frog, ain't they. I didn't have the heart to listen to the rest.

They did. I used to catch frogs and release them and I remember boys doing what he describes. It really was a loss of innocence for me. I bawled like a baby when I heard Anthony read this.

I find that I really have simply not got the heart for mean stuff anymore. I mean, really, I just can't stand to hear about it.

Believe me Debby, I am the same way. (Confession: I actually fast-forwarded past that section.) I especially cannot watch anything that has to do with violence against children or animals. I have been known to run from a room (and once from a movie theatre, catching my coat pocket on a seat and ripping the seam in my hurry to escape) so I get it.
