Ah, yes, the poppies have arrived

Does anyone else hear the Wicked Witch of the West's voice when they say, "poppies, poppppies" or is that just me?

First you get the tight little buds.

Then they start to open up just a leeeetle bit:

i love the way that poppies look like they're made from crepe paper.

i dislike peonies. i'm allergic to them and they're just way too popular.

Do the peony buds have ants? Can't grow them here in Dallas (Yes, I tried, I think they keep some pots of northern plants just for us as-yet-unassimilated "transplants". So to speak) but I sure remember mine with all those ants!
But we do have ants. Especially fire ants, not good.
My first year here, I went to a gardening center and asked if they had any "pe' uh nees". Had a back and forth conversation with a nice Texas lady: "Any what?" "Pe' uh nees."... until she finally said with relief "Oh, pe OH' nees! You must be from New York!" lol, I told her even further north than that...and happily took home my doomed pe OH'nees. I think the OH comes from "Oh, they looked so nice in the pot..."

Thanks everyone one for the lovely comments! Yes, the peeOHnies have ants. They can't open without 'em.

And Bush Babe, the lens I use for most of my flower pics is my trusty 18-200mm. I haven't mastered my macro lens yet, so I almost always use the all-purpose 18-200.

I also use the Picasa2 to edit them. It's free through Google. Mostly I crop them and fiddle with the contrast (adding or subtracting highlights/shadows) but I never touch the colour of the flowers, unless it's changing them to black/white entirely. But you can see, even with that lens, you can get nice and close.

I just went back into Picasa2 to check the properties of some of the shots to see how close I actually was. They range from 24mm to 95mm away.

I'm in Toronto this weekend, so I'll post some more when I get back home.

Just perusing numerous sites and caught yours. I love your pics of the poppies! I wish that we didn't live in an apartment right now so I could have a garden. Once again, beautiful pics!
