My brother-in-law

With one of his tomatoes.

He grew it from seed.

He looks a bit....smug, don't you think?

And there's a hint, a whiff of a challenge, methinks.

He's a food engineer.

I'm just a lowly housewife/writer with no tomato qualifications.

However, I hereby challenge you to a Tomato-Off.

This time, next year, we'll see who can produce the biggest tomatoes, buddy.

Watch your back.

Also, fry up some bacon,
wash some lettuce,
toast yourself some whole wheat,
and grab the mayo and freshly ground pepper
because I'm going to be providing some major
BLT action.

Now size does matter?

I'm so confuuuuuused.

Shove over and give me a BLT whilst I consider the matter.

When it comes to tomatoes, size does matter.

My brother-in-law said he was going to give me some seeds, but given our newly formed "competitive posture" that is no longer an option. And he said his plants are under 24 hour camera surveillance.

He knows me so well....

Interesting. I just read an article yesterday on how the fruits and veggies are getting so much bigger than they were even 50 years ago, but the nutrients in them have dropped by 45%. So, what is your brother, the food engineer, planning on doing about that? ;o)

By the way, do you have an Android phone? I found the perfect app for you!

Well, if it's any consolation, I downloaded that game and besides the fact that it's totally mindless which is a good thing some days, the squirrel does get bopped on the head a lot if you don't move the phone right, so there is some justice in the world ;o)

I think the lack of nutrients goes along with the inability to peel eggs half the time and the fact that our children are starting puberty much younger now. There are hormones in the meat we eat because they want the cows and chickens to grow at an accelerated rate and we invariably ingest them, chemicals to enhance size, color, shape which we also eat...the one thing I don't get is why the organic stuff that doesn't have all that expensive chemical crap on it cost more than the artificial food we eat now.

Sorry. Didn't mean to go on!

Dear Pam,

Please stop making Canada look so good. It's really hard not to pack up the Mini Cooper and head up there right now leaving Texas in the dust. Our tomatoes stopped producing in May because of the heat, we've had way too many 100 plus temperature days and now the heat has gone to our governor's head and he's decided he is a viable presidential candidate.

Thank you,

Your way south neighbor
