More Personals from the London Review of Books

They always feature the most bizarre personalities, unless I'm just a prude and this is what they're used to on the other side of the pond.

Hee hee hee, he almost had me until the very end. Now I have the giggles and am positively ecstatic I'm not single and looking for a date. Ah, me. I think I'd rather just curl up with my dog and a good book.

Um, I know I live a pretty sheltered life but what is a BDSM fetish? Never mind, maybe I don't want to know...

Well, Yutha, I think it's to do with bondage and discipline and submission....but not the same sort as in making our kids do the dishes and take out the garbage kind of stuff. He sounded so banal and interesting until that part. I could hear the record player go "rrrrrreeepp" in my head.

I only hope it doesn't attract the sort of spam I got after the mushroom photo, and the fish deboning device, which I removed after some interesting spam promising pills which could do the same thing. (rolling eyes)

It makes you wonder just how many responses these folks get. Do they want responses, or are they just in it for the laughs? And if they are not in it for the laughs, this stuff is pretty sad.

Debby, Oh no, they are serious, and this is a legitimate venue. They're definitely looking for responses. I think the ads are rather clever and witty compared to what we see over here, so I don't find them sad. I like the way they are phrased. Each is its own little story. The last one caught me up short, is all. But I'm sure for every kitten-puzzle, Scottish history loving, bondage seeking man there is a soulmate waiting in the glen.

It just gets worse on on-line dating sites where they don't even pretend to have creativity and imagination. And what's even worse, they don't even realize that those qualities are what makes a man dateable.

Laura, it's been so long since I have dated that I will take your word for it. But I agree - and I'd add a good sense of humour does it for me every time. I can forgive almost anything if he can make me laugh (well, maybe not BSDM-whatever guy.)
