RIP Gourmet Magazine

Gourmet Magazine has ceased publication as of its November 2009 issue. C'est dommage, but if you go HERE, you can get all the favourite cookie recipes going back to 1941.

Such a sad thing to happen. I'm one of those who prefers to page through a magazine or catalog rather than always reading or looking online.

*sigh*

Sometimes I wonder if in 20 years or so, paper will become obsolete.

I was DEVASTATED when I heard this news. I am a devoted foodie, and have subscribed to Gourmet for a while. I've had subscriptions to other food periodicals, but not one can compare with Gourmet.

It wasn't just the recipes. It was the stories around the recipes. I have kept many of the issues because of the great writing. They did a Southern cooking edition about two years ago, and people go crazy when I make the potato rolls.

And I adore Ruth Reichel (spelling?) who served as editor. I loved seeing her smile and reading her fab editorials.

Yes, so, so sad.

I tried subscribing once, but it took me so long to make my way through a single issue (so much great reading, and I really had to concentrate!) that I ended up "falling behind." It made feel completely inadequate, so I had to cancel. Instead, I'd pick up copies at the newsstand and taking my time. I'll miss that!

P.S. I loved Ruth Reichl's memoir "Comfort Me With Apples."

So glad I'm not the only one....

LG, you'll have to post the potato rolls recipe. Pretty please.

Dear NW,

Well, the post got so darn long I went ahead and posted the link to the recipe on my blog. Hie thee over there, because these rolls are so divine you'll want to make them for Christmas dinner.

You are a doll. Maybe I will, but likely I'll save them for a day after Christmas when I make turkey soup!
